Hello!
I’m writing this near the end of February, and I can hardly believe that the end of the month is here. I felt like I’ve had my head down and been working, working, working on so many fun articles and projects, which I detail below. There are also some secret things in the works, but I can’t mention them yet 🤫
Writing, writing, writing…
When I’m not at work, I’m writing! I’ve had the honor of writing quite a few things for Charleston City Paper (our local independent newsletter):
I also had something published in Slay Away! If you’re a horror fan — or even if you aren’t — you need to be following this online publication. E.L. King, the creator/editor, does some amazing work, some of which includes letting me publish a column about eco-horror every other month.
Peregrine Coast Press
In June 2022 I joined Peregrine Coast Press as the Words Lead! It’s been such a fun experience to work on amazing projects like Filmmakers Without Cameras: The Trilogy and Peregrine Pocketbooks, for which we are still in the review process.
I really do believe in independent publishing, so it’s really great to be right in the midst of that and helping indie creators get their work out into the world in a meaningful way. We also have so many cool projects in the works that I’m excited to share with you all once I can!
In the meantime, you should subscribe to our newsletter (and I’m not just saying that)! I take the lead on our blog/newsletter and we try to publish interesting, informative articles as well as general announcements about the press and our projects. My favorite thing to work on for the blog has been our Independent Creator Spotlight.
Surge: The Lowcountry Climate Magazine
When I moved to Charleston in 2021, I co-founded Surge: The Lowcountry Climate Magazine with Belvin Olasov, co-director of Charleston Climate Coalition. Our magazine centers around climate activism and art in the Lowcountry. To date, we’ve published three issues, with the most recent being released in December. You can read issues one and two online.
Chloe Hogan, the wonderful arts editor at Charleston City Paper, wrote an article about the magazine! I was interviewed for this article, which was my first time being on the other side of the the microphone, so to speak.
Personal Update
So, what have I been up to in my everyday life? Lots of physical activity, movie-watching, and reading!
My partner, Kimberly, convinced me to sign up to compete in a sprint triathlon in May (and also a 10k in both March and April), so I’ve started my training — with a short break because I had the flu. I’ve mostly been running and I feel that I’m already seeing improvements in how I feel during the run, some of which may be attributed to the warm, sunny weather we’ve been having in Charleston!
Some folks may know that I regularly practice yoga, so that’s been another big piece of my life recently. I go to a local yoga studio about 4 times a week and I’m also starting to do yoga at home. Though I’ve never considered myself to be someone who is particularly anxious, I’ve found that after regularly practicing yoga for nearly a year (my yoga-versary is in March!) I’m more in tune with how my body feels and am able to better navigate difficult periods of life. Intentional breathing and meditation have definitely been key parts of these feelings.
Otherwise, most things on the personal level have been more-or-less the same. I watched quite a few movies when I had the flu, including a new favorite (Tár) and some wacky goodness (The Invitation, Little Shop of Horrors).
Reading-wise it’s been a weird start to the year for me since I’ve mostly been reading health books! I absolutely loved Every Body Yoga by Jessamyn Stanley and "You Just Need to Lose Weight": And 19 Other Myths about Fat People by Aubrey Gordan (any other Maintenance Phase fans?). I highly recommend both!
I do have quite a few more yoga books I’d like to read by the end of the year, but I’m also looking forward to reading my backlog of climate-related fiction.
You can hire me!
I put this at the end because it really is the thing of least concern in this little update, but if you didn’t know, you can hire me to write content for you! I work with a couple of brands on SEO-aligned content for their websites to help them rank on search engines and I’m starting a similar style plan for the Press.
